The Count Of Monte Cristo
Alexandre Dumas
The Count of Monte Cristo is an exceptional piece of literature written by
Alexandre Dumas.
Although it is a lengthy book, (over 1,000 pages), it is a quick and exciting
read. Dumas created what I believe to be the perfect novel.
He blended every genre of writing into one masterpiece. There is action, drama,
romance, and suspense all throughout the story.
I love how Dumas unfolds the tale in the most precise detail. Every instance in
this book is filled with vivid imagery, and one feels as
if they are on Edmond Dantes’ journey.
The story is centered around Edmond Dantes, a young French sailor, who is
betrayed by his closest
friend. He is accused and wrongfully convicted of treason by a corrupt
magistrate and sentenced to life in prison. While in prison, he is
educated by a fellow prisoner in every subject and gains knowledge beyond his
years. As he is being taught, they work on digging a tunnel
out of the prison, but the old man dies in the process. Edmond escapes by
placing himself in the body bag and begins his epic journey to
vengeance.
