Second
Empire is Victorian style that was popular in the Midwest and Northeast
in the early 1800's. This style was fashionable during Ulysses S. Grant's
Presidency. However, in late 1800's, it became unfashionable because of
the cost and economic reasons.
Second Empire homes are architected with mansard roofs and dormer windows. It also has molded cornices
and decorative brackets. At the front center of the building, it has
a rectangular tower.
Second Empire style can either be laid out as symmetrical, where the rectangular element
is placed in the center, or asymmetrical,
where the tower element is placed off to the side. The exterior is usually
composed of wood, brick, or stone.
This style was used in designing state institutions,
such as the State Asylum for the Insane in Columbus Ohio.
