Description:

These snakes are uniform in color ranging from light to dark brown with an orange, yellow or cream under belly.  However, when they are first born and until they reach adulthood they are adorned with broad bands on the back of the head and throughout the rest of the body that are usually dark grey or black.  These bands will disappear in time.

Habitat:

As the name states, these reptiles are found throughout eastern Australia with the exception of Tasmania.  They are also found in New Guinea, being transferred there by man.  They are found in almost any region of the east from the deserts to the grasslands, including swampy areas, pastures and woodlands.

Diet:

Having a typical snake diet, Brown Snakes will feed on small mammals which consists of rats, mice and much more.  They will also feed on birds, lizards and other snakes.

Venom & Bite:

Of the three thousand snake bites a year that occur in Australia, approximately half are attributed to the Brown Snake.  Their average yield is about 4 mg of neurotoxic venom that houses procoagulants causing progressive paralysis and incoagulable blood that may cause bleeding into the brain.
