
Description:
These snakes are uniform in color ranging from light to
dark brown with an orange, yellow or cream under belly. However, when
they are first born and until they reach adulthood they are adorned with
broad bands on the back of the head and throughout the rest of the body that
are usually dark grey or black. These bands will disappear in time.
Habitat:
As the name states, these reptiles are found throughout
eastern Australia with the exception of Tasmania. They are also found
in New Guinea, being transferred there by man. They are found in
almost any region of the east from the deserts to the grasslands, including
swampy areas, pastures and woodlands.

Diet:
Having a typical snake diet, Brown Snakes will feed on
small mammals which consists of rats, mice and much more. They will
also feed on birds, lizards and other snakes.
Venom & Bite:
Of the three thousand snake bites a year that occur in
Australia, approximately half are attributed to the Brown Snake. Their
average yield is about 4 mg of neurotoxic venom that houses procoagulants
causing progressive paralysis and incoagulable blood that may cause bleeding
into the brain.
